Novel of the Week - Avenger's Angel by Heather Killough-Walden

This week I want to write about one of my favourite literary genre : the religious fantasy. I don’t know why, but I find it very interesting, engaging and mysterious. I’m really into the theme of God’s angels and all the mythology that’s behind it. So here’s one of the kind : Avenger’s Angel by Heather Killough-Walden.

The story is about God’s favourite four archangels : Micheal, Gabriel, Uriel and Azrael. As a gift for their loyalty, God decided to create four archesses, their “soul mates”. But a few “lower class” angels got angry and wants to kill the archesses. God sends them on Earth in order to protect them and the four archangels follow them.

Avenger’s Angel is about the former Angel of Revenge, Uriel.  As well as his “brothers”, he’s a tall, good looking guy and (while searching his soul mate) he become an actor, going by the name of Christopher Daniels. During a promoting tour of his latest movie (based on a book) he found himself in a library were the beautiful Eleanor Granger works. Uriel/Christopher needs only a quick look to the girl to understand that she’s the one. Her archess.  He starts asking her out,  calling her and when Eleanor finds him on her doorsteps decided to give him a try. Anyhow, she has to admit she finds him very attractive…that’s why doesn’t understand why someone like him wants someone like her.

Eleanor is very modest, she has no clue how beautiful she is. She also has a secret…she can move object by the power of her mind (Telekinesis) and can heal people, from a simple stomach ache  to serious injuries. She’s always been like that and doesn’t know why. When she was younger, she and her family had to run    away from a secret organization that wanted to imprison and make experiments on her….this organization is still looking after her and eventually finds her and kidnap her while she’s out on a date with Uriel. During all of this, another ambiguous character pops out: Samuel, rich and powerful owner of a publishing empire.

The novel is a well done mix of an adventure/fantasy and “50 shades of..”, some of the love scenes are pretty hot…in one of them Uriel risks to take fire, literally!  The novel is both funny and well written, I fell in love with the characters, which is always a good thing.

My vote : 8/10

This is a saga of 4 books as (of course!) the four protagonists:
 - Avenger’s Angel  (Uriel)
 -  Messenger’s Angel  (Gabriel)
 - Death’s Angel (Azrael)
 - Warrior’s Angel (Micheal)
 - Samael (spin-off book of the “not so protagonist” character that’s however in all the stories.)
